'Home' again

Hello all. We are back in Hobart from our 10 day whirl around Tasmania. HaHa, I've heard that referred to as taking a vacation from our vacation. Well, yeah, that's what we did. Before we left, I was thinking how being as we settled in an apartment here, I was looking forward to getting away for a bit. And, I chuckled at the thought of getting away from getting away.

But, anyhow. We're back. Here.

A beautiful day in the neighborhood

There are some events that are still going on for a limited time even after summer festival is winding down. The Sydney - Hobart yacht race and 'The Taste' festivities have ended. We've seen maxi yachts with their huge masts in the harbor, tasted food from many of the local restaurants each evening, and enjoyed lots of busking and people watching.

One of the things that we still wanted to see is the Narryna Heritage Museum and a short play. that they put on. [Pronounced like Corinna, with a soft 'in', your choice whether to accent the first or second syllable.]

The museum is filled with very old and interesting artifacts, in one of the oldest stone houses in Battery Point. On this hot, sunny day, I was amazed at how nice and cool it was in the house because of the thick stone walls. It is on Hampden Road, one of the main streets in historic Battery Point, only about 3 blocks away from our apartment. So, we took a short walk over, toured the house, saw the play, had some coffee and cake at a Hampden Road eatery, then strolled home.





One of the special exhibits was about sewing and sewing machines, called 'Stitches in Time'. Interesting collection of old sewing machines, advertisements, patterns, home-made ladies dresses from the early 1800's, and implements like lace making kits.

While waiting for the play to start, we struck up a conversation with a guy from Florida. He was on a 21 day tour. He was having a great time, he said, because he was an architect who specialized in historical building styles and renovation. He was loving Battery Point and said he was taking a lot of photos. I've been wanting to do some posts about the Battery Point neighborhood, and this gave me a little nudge to snap photos along our walk.

Our local post office. It also sells candy, newspapers, phone cards, and has an internet connection for a fee. See how the PO Boxes are facing the street?



There are a lot of buildings with this sort of decorative lattice work.



And, lots of stone work in the houses and in fences, some of it very old and long lasting.



We opted out of the tea at the museum, in favor of a Jackman and McRoss. They have tables outside and great desserts.
